I Am The Way, The Truth and The Life

(John 14)

John 14:1-7

Understanding the Context:

• What situation are the disciples in that would cause their hearts to be troubled?(Consider the preceding chapters, especially Jesus's predictions of his departure.)

• Why do you think Jesus begins this discourse with the command, "Let not your hearts be troubled"? What does this reveal about his concern for his disciples?

Analysing the Key Verses:

• Verse 1:

o What does it mean to "believe in God" and "believe also in me"? How are these two beliefs connected?

o How can belief act as an antidote to a troubled heart?

• Verses 2-3:

o What is the significance of "my Father's house" and "many rooms"? What does this imagery convey about heaven?

o What comfort does Jesus offer by saying he is going to "prepare a place" for them?

o What does Jesus's promise to "come again and will take you to myself" mean to you?

• Verses 4-6:

o Why does Thomas's question in verse 5 highlight the disciples' confusion?

o What does it mean that Jesus is "the way"? 1 What implications does this have for how we approach God?

o What does it mean that Jesus is "the truth"?

o What does it mean that Jesus is "the life"?

• Verse 7:

o How does Jesus connect knowing him with knowing the Father?

o What does it mean to "have seen" the father?

Personal Application:

• In what areas of your life are you experiencing a "troubled heart"? How can Jesus's words bring you comfort?

• How does Jesus's claim to be "the way, the truth, and the life" challenge your understanding of other belief systems?

• How does the understanding of Jesus being the only way to the Father affect your personal evangelism?

• How does the knowledge that Jesus is preparing a place for you change your daily walk with him?
