I Am The True Vine (John 15)

John 15:1-17

Understanding the Metaphor (Verses 1-8):

  • The Vine and the Branches:

o What does Jesus mean by calling himself the 'true vine'? What does this imply about his relationship with believers?

o Who is the 'gardener' or 'vinedresser' (the Father)? What is his role?

o What does it mean to 'abide' in Jesus? How is this different from simply believing in him?

o What does it mean to 'bear fruit'? What kind of fruit is Jesus referring to? (Consider Galatians 5:22-23)

o What does it mean to be 'pruned'? How does God prune us, and what is the purpose of it?

Love and Obedience (Verses 9-17):

  • Love as the Foundation:

o How does Jesus describe his love for his disciples?

o Why is love so central to his teaching?

o How does obedience relate to love in this passage?

o Jesus calls his disciples 'friends'. What does this reveal about his relationship with us?

o What are the characteristics of this friendship?

o What does Jesus mean when he says, "You did not choose me, but I chose you?"

o What implications does this have for our sense of calling and purpose?

Prayer and Fruitfulness:

o How does Jesus connect prayer with bearing fruit?

o What does verse 16 mean when Jesus says “the Father will give you whatever you ask”?

Application and Reflection:

  • How can we practically 'abide' in Jesus in our daily lives?

  • What are some specific ways we can 'bear fruit' in our relationships, work, and ministry?

  • How does this passage challenge our understanding of love and friendship?

  • How does the concept of divine pruning impact your understanding of trials and difficulties?

  • What is the difference between worldly love and Godly love as presented in this chapter?
